Monday, August 3, 2015 - Tomahawk Northwoods AOMCI Meet

This morning not much was happening. Breezy and cool weather.
Jack and I went and bought p'nuts for our "help yourself" basket, and a warm hoodie for me!

I love the craquelure on the Johnson decal!!

A lot of folks stood around and held up trailers today :-)

Below: This is the view from under our shade tent today.  Nothing out yet since meet hasn't started and Jack is too busy talking to think about unloading.  Both tents are up now though.  And p'nuts are out.  You have to take them in at night or they get soggy. 

It's cherry season.   YUM!!!!    Thanks, Kent!

Trucks vs. Horses, plus 1914 Caille

The article sharing the page with this ad helps put the beginning of the outboard motor era in perspective...the men and women who went for boat ride powered by an outboard might very well still use a horse for land travel.
Note the pierced skeg which is the "tell" for a 1914.

To get more of a feel for 1914...

1911 - Article Written BY C.B. Waterman

Just because we have arrived at Tomahawk doesn't mean I'll stop looking for time warp odds and ends!

This article, written by Cameron B. Waterman, is in praise of cruising around the north shore of Lake Superior.

I'm placing this article on here in two sizes because the super big (but easy to read) one spills over into the table of contents...which is annoying.  So, below this is a full size copy for actual reading pleasure :-)

"Coughing Sarah" was also Waterman's nickname for his first motor.

MotorBoating May 1911

Sunday - Tomahawk

Actually, we stopped here first :-)   Checked the dock for the Bess Evinrude Rowboat Motor Ice Cream Run; docks there but the water is so low I don't know if a geezer can get up out of a boat onto it...we'll work it out.

From earlier in the day:
Interesting cloud formations!  Dimples like dough sort of.

My wire set up in the van...I need to work on it.

Tomahawk or Bust!

The "bust" part seemed a little too likely as we hit some REALLY spooky weather leaving Manistique this morning!!!!!

As we packed the van, the lake across the road looked like this.

A few miles up the road, rain so hard you could not see ahead...like driving into fine steel wool...dark and thick.  At least, I said to myself, it isn't windy.  That's when the wind really picked up and some hail joined the torrents of rain.  I am happy to report it didn't get worse, since the only thing left to make it worse was a tornado, or the hail getting super big!

This is another band of rain we head under around Escanaba.

Now, after a few more rains, I am looking at the bluest sky with the whitest clouds one could hope to see just outside of Norway (Michigan).

Phew...

Half hour later - dash lights just came on 'cuz it got real dark.  Lightening.  Whooboy...here we go again.  30 minutes to T'hawk.
